Temporary Residents & Overseas Visitors

🌍 Temporary Residents & Overseas Visitors

We welcome patients who need NHS care while staying in our area temporarily, including UK-based visitors and people from abroad. Our team at Bryngwyn Surgery is here to help you access safe, appropriate care.

🧳 Temporary Residents – What You Need to Know

If you’re staying in our catchment area for more than 24 hours but less than 3 months, you can register as a temporary resident. This applies to:

  • UK residents registered with another GP
  • Students or workers staying temporarily
  • Visitors staying with family or friends

You’ll need to complete a short form at reception. It helps if you bring:

  • Photo ID (passport, driving licence, etc.)
  • NHS number (if known)
  • Details of any medications or health conditions

⏱️ Temporary patients can be seen during normal surgery hours for urgent or necessary care.

🌐 Overseas Visitors – NHS Eligibility

Your access to free NHS care depends on:

  • Your country of origin
  • The reason for your visit
  • Whether you’ve paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

You will always receive free:

  • Emergency or immediately necessary treatment
  • GP consultations and primary care (including temporary resident registration)

You may be charged for:

  • Non-urgent treatment (e.g. routine blood tests, dressings, injections)
  • Private services such as travel vaccinations or medical reports

Please note: We are required to ask you about your residency and may ask to see supporting evidence. This helps us apply NHS Wales policy correctly.

πŸ“„ For full guidance, see the Welsh Health Circular:

πŸ’³ Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

If you’ve paid the IHS as part of your visa, you’re entitled to NHS treatment during your stay.

🧾 Unsure whether this applies to you? Ask at reception or check here:

πŸ’· Fees & Charges (if applicable)

We will always explain any costs before providing treatment. Typical examples include:

  • Private prescriptions
  • Travel-related care
  • Non-NHS medical letters or forms

πŸ“Ž See our Fees & Charges PageΒ

πŸ₯ Important Notes for Overseas Visitors

  • We cannot provide long-term follow-up care for non-residents
  • Repeat prescriptions for non-UK residents are limited to urgent/emergency need
  • We may refer you to a hospital or local pharmacist where appropriate

πŸ“Œ Some hospital services are not free to overseas visitors. For hospital care or ongoing treatment, you may be contacted by the Health Board’s Overseas Visitors Team.
